BIO IS BACK!!

The BIO International Convention is known as the premier event for the biotechnology and pharmaceuticals industries. It brings together international partnering and networking opportunities at a high level, and after two years the Convention was back in person. This year’s theme was Limitless Together. How appropriate for us all to come together and be reminded that we are stronger in collaboration with one another and that the possibilities are indeed limitless. BioAlberta led the Alberta delegation to San Diego June 13-16, 2022. We quickly remembered what it was like to mingle and interact in person on such a grand scale. Meeting new contacts, catching up with old ones, networking internationally, and having conversations that led to more conversations kept the week very full.

The Canada Pavilion, hosted by BIOTECanada, opened on Day 1 of the Convention and there was lots to talk about! The Pavilion floor was kept busy by ongoing events such as the biomanufacturing and talent-building panels that included some great speakers. The Canada Pavilion was situated next to Germany and right across the aisle from Brazil. This reminded us of two things: Canada is a small but important player in the life sciences industry, and that Canada is a player on the world stage in the life sciences industry.

Our partners at Entos had a big week at BIO. They officially opened their new R&D facility in Torrey Pines, CA. The space will also host Entos’ sister companies, allowing for increased collaboration and expansion. Nanostics pitched at BIOTECanada’s Coast to Coast Pitching Competition. All told we had 12 companies and 18 organizations participating in BIO this year.

We look forward to leading the Alberta Delegation at the next BIO – we will see you in Boston, MA in June 2023!

ALBERTA @ BIO SHOWCASE DINNER

BioAlberta’s members are what drive us as an industry association. We continue to enable success for our members as we host a wide range of networking events – the Alberta@BIO dinner was not one to be missed!

In conjunction with the BIO International Convention, BioAlberta hosted the Alberta@BIO Dinner on June 14 at the Westin San Diego Gaslamp. Almost 80 attendees representing Alberta SMEs, investors, provincial life sciences organizations and economic development agencies connected, networked, learned about one another and ate a delicious meal together.

Bringing together the industry for collaboration and connection at an event like this is not just about networking and having a good glass of wine with old (and new!) friends. It is about bringing the stakeholders together to ensure that the wider discussion advances Alberta’s economic opportunities in the life sciences. When we all come together and show a collaborative effort, we can do great things.

We are grateful to our partner Novartis who sponsored the Alberta@BIO dinner and were also well-represented by their attendance, with remarks from both Andrea Marazzi (Country President) and John Lewis (Director of HR). We had engaging and informative presentations from Edmonton Global, Calgary Economic Development, and Invest Alberta between courses. Our night was capped off with a wonderful talk by Dr. Lorne Tyrrell of the Li Ka Shing Applied Virology Institute.
